Manchester United's pre-season preparations began with a goalless draw against Leeds United in Stockholm, a match that provided head coach Ruben Amorim with plenty of food for thought. Amorim, who is embarking on his first full season with the Red Devils, acknowledged that there is "a lot to do" before the start of the Premier League campaign.

The match, held at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm, a venue that holds fond memories for United fans after their 2017 Europa League triumph, was a "good test" according to Amorim, providing an opportunity to assess his squad against Premier League opposition. He fielded two completely different lineups in each half, giving several players a chance to impress.

New signings Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon both made their debuts, with Amorim praising their performances. Amorim highlighted Cunha's aggression and ability to operate between the lines, indicating what the team needs. He also believes that Leon, who joined from Cerro PorteƱo, has the work ethic to become a "very good player".

Despite the positive debuts and the clean sheet, Amorim identified areas that require improvement. He pointed out the large distances between the sectors of the team at times and the struggles they faced when pressing high, with Leeds winning the second ball and creating dangerous situations. Amorim also noted a "lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park," which made it difficult to bring the ball forward.

In addition to tactical adjustments, Amorim emphasized the importance of team spirit and togetherness. He expressed his satisfaction with the environment within the squad, stating that "we are going to struggle but we struggle together and that is the beginning of everything". Amorim also acknowledged the need to connect with the club's global fanbase, promising to be closer to them and fulfill Manchester United's responsibilities in that area.

There were some bright spots for United. Goalkeeper Tom Heaton, with Andre Onana currently injured, made several sharp saves, staking his claim for the No.1 spot. Amad Diallo also looked sharp at wing-back.

Looking ahead, Amorim has four more friendlies to experiment with different combinations and tactics. A key focus will be integrating new players like Cunha and Leon into the squad. The anticipated arrival of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford will also provide Amorim with more attacking options. As the pre-season progresses, Amorim will likely field an XI closer to the one he envisions for the season opener against Arsenal.

While the draw against Leeds may not have been the most exciting result, it provided Amorim with valuable insights into his team's strengths and weaknesses. With "a lot to do" before the season starts, the Portuguese coach will be working hard to address the identified issues and ensure that Manchester United are ready to compete.
