John Klingberg's 2024-25 season with the Edmonton Oilers was a story of perseverance and unexpected contributions. Signed mid-season on January 17, 2025, for $1.755 million, the veteran defenseman aimed to revive his career after a hip surgery that sidelined him for an extended period.

Expectations were measured upon Klingberg's arrival in Edmonton. He had been acquired to provide offensive depth and experience on the Oilers' blue line. However, his initial performance in the regular season was underwhelming. In 11 games, Klingberg posted a single goal and three assists. His underlying numbers painted a concerning picture, with poor defensive metrics that placed him below replacement level. A blocked shot in a March 4th game against Anaheim led to an ankle injury, further disrupting his integration into the team.

Despite the rocky start, Klingberg's fortunes shifted dramatically in the playoffs. Inserted into the lineup in Game 2 of the first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings, he immediately made an impact with an assist. As the playoffs progressed, Klingberg solidified his role, forming a useful partnership with Jake Walman. His offensive contributions included a goal and three assists in 19 playoff games. More importantly, his presence seemed to stabilize the Oilers' defense.

Klingberg's improved play was evident in the team's underlying numbers during the first three rounds of the playoffs. When he was on the ice at five-on-five, the Oilers dominated in expected goals and actual goal share. While these numbers dipped slightly in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers, Klingberg's overall impact was noticeable and appreciated by head coach Kris Knoblauch.

Ultimately, the Oilers opted to let Klingberg walk in free agency. On July 1, 2025, he signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the San Jose Sharks, which included trade protection. While his time in Edmonton was brief, Klingberg proved his value as a reliable defenseman capable of contributing in critical moments. His journey from a struggling player to a valuable playoff contributor highlighted his resilience and hockey sense.
