Aston Villa are reportedly on the verge of securing the services of Nice forward Evann Guessand in a deal worth approximately £30.5 million. The 24-year-old Ivorian international is expected to undergo a medical on Wednesday, with the club planning to offer him a long-term contract.
Guessand's impending arrival is poised to bolster Unai Emery's attacking options significantly. His versatility is a key attribute that appeals to Emery, as he can play across the front line, including as a central striker, a position where Villa are currently lacking depth. Following Jhon Duran's exit in January and Marcus Rashford's return to Manchester United after a loan spell, Ollie Watkins remains the only recognized centre-forward in the squad.
Throughout the summer transfer window, Aston Villa have faced uncertainty over their options in the final third, which has not been helped by the need to comply with the Premier League's and UEFA's financial regulations. The club have been targeting a dynamic, young forward capable of playing in multiple positions, and Guessand fits that profile perfectly.
Guessand enjoyed a productive season in Ligue 1, scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists in 33 appearances. Notably, he excelled on the right wing, where he contributed eight goals and six assists in just 16 matches. His ability to roam inside and link up with the striker makes him a dangerous player in the half-spaces.
Several other clubs, including Crystal Palace, Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Fenerbahce, have expressed interest in Guessand. However, Villa have seemingly won the race for his signature, making him their first major outfield addition of the summer transfer window.
The deal is structured with an initial payment of €30 million (£26.11 million) plus €5 million (£4.35 million) in performance-related add-ons. Nice had been looking to sell Guessand to fund a renewal of their playing squad, and they had previously accepted a €35m bid from Neom SC, which the player turned down in favor of a move to the Premier League or Bundesliga.
Guessand's potential arrival could also impact the future of Ollie Watkins, who has been linked with a move away from Villa Park. Manchester United are reportedly interested in the England international, and Villa may consider selling him for a fee between £40m and £50m.
Born in Ajaccio, France, Guessand has represented Ivory Coast at the international level, earning 10 caps and scoring one goal. He previously played for France at the youth level.
Guessand is known for his mobility, technical skills, work rate, and intelligence in the final third. His height and build have even drawn comparisons to Didier Drogba. He is expected to join up with the Villa squad shortly after completing his medical and could be in contention to feature in their Premier League opener against Newcastle United on August 16.
