A recent survey has revealed a record number of reported abuse incidents at football games during the last season, raising concerns about the escalating levels of misconduct within the sport. The findings highlight a worrying trend of increasing abuse towards players, officials, and even fans, demanding immediate action from football associations and clubs to address this issue.

The survey indicates a significant rise in racist abuse across all levels of the game, with an alarming 47% increase. Faith-based discriminatory reports also saw a surge, driven by sharp increases in antisemitism (63%) and Islamophobia (138%). Homophobic abuse reports decreased slightly in both grassroots and professional games; however, LGBTQ+ hate rose sharply online. Sexism and misogyny also continue to surge, with reports up by 44%. Furthermore, there was a 22% increase in reports of discrimination at the youth level, including a seven-fold rise in abuse in under-12s football.

Abuse towards officials in grassroots football has more than doubled compared to the previous season, indicating a breakdown in respect and discipline at the foundational levels of the sport. This increase is particularly concerning, as it may deter individuals from participating as referees and assistant referees, potentially impacting the future of the game.

Player-specific discriminatory reports in the professional game have also reached unprecedented levels, with abuse targeting players soaring by 43%. This demonstrates the immense pressure and scrutiny that professional athletes face, both on and off the field, and the urgent need for measures to protect them from such abuse.

While around 84% of fans surveyed said they could recognize verbal discriminatory behavior at a game, a large proportion (22%) said they are unlikely to report any act of discrimination in the future.

These findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to combat abuse and discrimination in football. Football associations, clubs, and governing bodies must work together to implement stricter regulations, enhance reporting mechanisms, and promote educational initiatives to foster a culture of respect and inclusivity. Stricter punishments for abusive behavior, both on and off the field, may act as a deterrent and send a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, it is crucial to provide support and resources for victims of abuse, ensuring they have access to confidential reporting channels, counseling services, and legal assistance. Creating a safe and supportive environment for individuals to come forward and report incidents of abuse is essential in addressing this pervasive issue.

The rise in reported abuse episodes at football games is a wake-up call for the sport. By acknowledging the problem, implementing effective strategies, and working collaboratively, football can strive to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
