In a candid conversation with Rahul Dravid, Ravichandran Ashwin revealed the emotions and reasoning behind his surprising Test retirement in December 2024. Speaking on Ashwin's YouTube channel series, "Kutti Stories," the veteran off-spinner opened up about his decision to hang up his boots mid-series in Australia.
Ashwin, who was India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket at the time of his retirement, admitted that the prospect of spending more time with his family was a significant factor. "I mean, not in terms of not wanting to contribute to the team, but you're thinking if I would rather be at home, spending time with children. They are also growing up, and what am I actually doing?". He had initially considered retiring around the age of 34 or 35.
The off-spinner confessed that the lack of playing time in overseas tours eventually took its toll. "Going on tours, and you know, having to just sit out a lot more, eventually got to me,” Ashwin explained. He elaborated on how being benched during overseas tours pushed him towards his abrupt retirement. This feeling of being sidelined led him to question his role and purpose. "Sitting out eventually got to me… what am I doing?".
Ashwin emphasized that his decision was a personal one, driven by a desire to prioritize his family and re-evaluate his connection with the game. He clarified that it wasn't due to any resentment towards the team.
Dravid also suggested that taking a break from the game could reignite his passion. Ashwin acknowledged the importance of stepping back to reconnect with cricket, stating, "Sometimes, being there in a certain situation and withdrawing yourself, giving yourself a break from the whole environment can trigger your passion once again to come back".
Despite retiring from international cricket, Ashwin affirmed his commitment to continue playing domestic cricket, where he could enjoy more flexibility and time at home. He saw his retirement as an opportunity to transition into a new phase of his life while still remaining connected to the sport he loves.
Ashwin's retirement sparked considerable discussion, with many feeling that his contributions to Indian cricket deserved a grand farewell. However, Ashwin chose a quiet exit, reflecting his grounded personality. His decision underscores the demanding nature of international cricket and the personal sacrifices players often make. It also highlights the increasing competition for spots in the Indian team, given the immense talent pool in the country.
