Aaryavir Sehwag, son of the legendary Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, has sparked a debate in the cricketing world with his bold preferences in a recent "This or That" game. The 17-year-old, currently playing for Central Delhi Kings in the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025, chose Shubman Gill over stalwarts like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, but ultimately picked Virat Kohli as the greatest batter of his generation.
In a rapid-fire session with InsideSport, Aaryavir was presented with pairs of Indian cricketers and asked to choose his favorite. Initially, his choices seemed conventional, as he picked Gill over Abhishek Sharma, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya. The surprise came when Aaryavir chose Gill over MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain renowned for his leadership and World Cup victories. He didn't stop there, also placing Gill ahead of Rohit Sharma, one of India's most successful white-ball batters and the captain who led India to victory in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Aaryavir also picked Gill over Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson.
Eventually, Gill was outranked when Virat Kohli's name came up. Aaryavir hailed Kohli as the greatest batter of his era and chose him over Sachin Tendulkar, even acknowledging that his father's favorite was the "Little Master".
Shubman Gill has indeed made a mark in recent years. As of August 26, 2025, Gill has played in 2647 Test matches, with a batting average of 41.36. In his Test career, MS Dhoni has played 90 matches with a batting average of 38.09, and Rohit Sharma has played 67 matches with a batting average of 40.57. Gill also holds the record for being the fastest player to reach 2000 runs in 38 innings and 2500 runs in 50 innings in ODI cricket. He also became the youngest cricketer to score a double century in ODIs. In a recent Test match against England in July 2025, Gill scored 269 runs from 387 balls, registering his maiden Test double century.
Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, has a strong record in ODIs, with over 8,000 runs scored in his first 200 innings. He also holds the record for most runs in T20 Internationals. MS Dhoni has played around 538 international matches and has scored 17266 runs in total in all three formats.
Aaryavir Sehwag's choices reflect the evolving preferences of young cricketers, with Shubman Gill's popularity clearly rising among the next generation. Just like his father, Aaryavir is a right-handed opening batter. He made headlines during the DPL 2025 auction, where he was acquired by the Central Delhi Kings for ₹8 Lakh. He has represented Delhi in age-group tournaments and is also a part of their Under-19 squad. One of his notable performances is the innings of 297 runs he played in the 2024-25 Cooch Behar Trophy.
