Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement to offload winger Antony to Real Betis, bringing an end to his disappointing spell at Old Trafford. The Brazilian winger, who cost the Red Devils a hefty £85 million in 2022, is now poised to return to the La Liga club where he spent the second half of last season on loan.
Antony's move to Manchester United was highly anticipated, but he failed to live up to expectations. In his time at Old Trafford, he made 62 appearances and only managed to score 5 goals. Prior to his move to Manchester United, Antony showcased his talent at Ajax, winning two Eredivisie titles and one KNVB Cup. His performances in the Netherlands led to a high-profile transfer to Manchester United, becoming the highest sum paid for an Eredivisie player.
His last Premier League start for United was in a 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace in May 2024, and his last league goal came against Burnley the week before. Finding happiness again during his loan spell at Betis, Antony described his time in England as difficult, affecting his family life.
Real Betis will submit an offer for Antony soon, where they will purchase 50% of the player for approximately £22 million. This means United will still own half of Antony, and Betis will have to offer United more money in the future if they wish to buy the Brazilian outright.
The winger was also part of a group of players who trained separately from the main squad. Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim, made it clear that he didn't want Antony in the squad.
Manchester United are confident that at least three players will depart before the transfer window closes. Alejandro Garnacho is on the verge of joining Chelsea for £40 million, while Rasmus Hojlund is nearing a loan move to Napoli. Jadon Sancho's future remains uncertain, with Roma still interested. Kobbie Mainoo has requested a loan exit, but United are reluctant to let him leave. Tyrell Malacia is also available for transfer, with Elche showing interest.
