Rohit Sharma, India's ODI captain, is set to undergo fitness tests at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. The 38-year-old will participate in the Yo-Yo Test and the Bronco Test as part of the pre-season fitness assessment. Other key players, including Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah, will also undergo fitness evaluations at the CoE.
These fitness tests are a mandatory part of the BCCI's protocol for contracted players. The tests help the CoE identify areas where players need to improve and allow for tailored training programs. Following the England Test series, players were given exercise regimens to follow at home. The upcoming assessments will evaluate their progress and readiness for the season.
Rohit Sharma's presence at the CoE signifies his commitment to the ODI format, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. He retired from T20Is and Test cricket, making him available solely for the 50-over format. The last time Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli played together for India was during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
In addition to the Yo-Yo test, Rohit will also undertake a Dexa Scan to measure bone density and undergo blood tests. The Bronco Test, a new addition to the assessment, is a "hard-aerobic running assessment" involving shuttle runs over varying distances. The test requires participants to complete five sets of shuttle runs covering 60m, 40m, and 20m, with the aim of completing the drill as quickly as possible. The total distance covered in the Bronco test is 1200 meters.
There is speculation about Rohit Sharma potentially playing for India A in a three-match one-day series against Australia A in Kanpur, starting September 30. This series could serve as a tune-up for the ODI series against Australia in October. The three ODIs against Australia are scheduled for October 19, 23, and 25.
While Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Jasprit Bumrah are confirmed to be undergoing the fitness tests, there is no clarity on Virat Kohli's participation. Kohli is currently residing with his family in the United Kingdom.
Rohit Sharma last played a competitive match in IPL 2025 and his last match for India was the 2025 Champions Trophy final against New Zealand. Since 2023, he has scored 1714 runs in 38 matches at an average of 48.97 and a strike rate of 117.2.
