In the midst of swirling transfer rumors surrounding Alexander Isak, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has commended his squad for their professionalism and focus. The ongoing speculation about Isak's potential move to Liverpool has been a significant distraction, but Howe insists that his players have remained committed to the team's goals.
Howe acknowledged the unsettling nature of transfer sagas, especially when they involve key players like Isak. However, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive and focused environment within the squad. He credited the players for their maturity in handling the situation and not allowing it to negatively impact their performance.
"That is where I have been for a long time with the Alex situation because it will be detrimental for me to invest any more time with that situation when I have 25/30 players needing every ounce of energy and time," Howe said. "And the team needs me to focus on trying to get results, that is what I have tried to do. Other people are dealing with that situation for me, it has been: 'Let me focus on the players are playing and can influence other results'."
The Isak transfer saga has been ongoing for weeks, with reports of a potential £130 million bid from Liverpool. Isak himself fueled the speculation with an emotional Instagram post hinting at "broken promises," and has reportedly refused to train with Newcastle. Howe has denied ever promising Isak a transfer. "Absolutely not,” he said. “I never make any promises to any players regarding transfers because, ultimately, I'm not in control of the whole thing. I would never make a promise like that to any player".
Newcastle have already moved to secure a replacement for Isak, completing a deal for German striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart. However, they are also looking to add another attacking player, with Brentford's Yoane Wissa and Wolves' Jorgen Strand Larsen among the targets.
Despite the potential departure of Isak, Howe remains optimistic about the team's prospects. He believes that the new signings will strengthen the squad and provide the necessary firepower. Howe also praised the existing players for stepping up and showing their capabilities.
Howe has also responded to rumors that Isak has said goodbye to his teammates at the training ground. Howe stated that he had "no knowledge" of such an event and assured that he "would know" if it had transpired. When probed about receiving a farewell from Isak, Howe responded: "No, I have had no communication". Howe further questioned about the alleged meeting and reiterated: "I have no knowledge of that, I can't tell you it didn't happen, but I certainly can't tell you it did. That is the first I have heard of it. I am pretty sure I would have known".
With the transfer window closing soon, the Isak situation is expected to be resolved quickly. Whether he stays or goes, Howe is confident that his squad has the resilience and unity to overcome this challenge and continue to compete at the highest level.
