Ravichandran Ashwin is poised to make a significant move into the ILT20 (International League T20) in the UAE after retiring from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ashwin has reportedly been in discussions with the ILT20 organizers and is likely to enter the auction, scheduled for September 30 in Dubai. The veteran off-spinner, who also retired from international cricket in December 2024, is seeking new opportunities in global T20 leagues.
Ashwin confirmed his interest in participating in the ILT20 auction, stating, "Yes, I am in talks with the organisers. Hopefully, I will have a buyer if I register for the auction". The league is scheduled to take place from December 2, 2025, to January 4, 2026. If selected, Ashwin would be the most prominent Indian cricketer to participate in the UAE's ILT20. Previously, only a few Indian players have featured in the league, including Ambati Rayudu, who played eight matches for MI Emirates. Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan were also picked in the league previously but they could not bag a debut game.
The ILT20 is shifting from a draft system to an auction for recruiting players this year. The registration process is underway, with September 10 as the final date for player enrollment.
Ashwin's decision to explore overseas leagues comes after announcing his retirement from the IPL, where he played for 16 seasons and represented teams such as Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals. He ended his IPL career with 187 wickets in 221 matches, ranking as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. Ashwin has also expressed his desire to enjoy cricket without pressure and recapture the joy of street cricket on the global stage.
According to Ashwin, he is looking to play in different leagues for a couple of years and wants to live life on his own terms. He also stated that he would like to explore a player-cum-coach role, expanding his presence in global T20 leagues. "They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Ashwin's decision to retire from the IPL was influenced by the demanding schedule and the physical toll of the tournament. He acknowledged that the travel, matches, and recovery periods had become increasingly difficult to manage with age. "Three months of IPL is a little too much for me. It's draining," Ashwin said, expressing his admiration for MS Dhoni's longevity.
With his vast experience and tactical acumen, Ashwin could be a valuable addition to any franchise in the ILT20 or other leagues. Several leagues, including Australia's Big Bash League, have reportedly approached Ashwin following his IPL retirement.
