In a significant setback for the Indian team ahead of the ICC Women's World Cup 2025, wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has been ruled out due to a left knee injury sustained during a preparatory camp in Visakhapatnam. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named uncapped Assam cricketer Uma Chetry as her replacement in the squad.

Bhatia's injury occurred during the ongoing preparatory camp, where the team was preparing for the World Cup. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring her progress and has wished her a speedy recovery. This is not the first time Bhatia has faced injury setbacks; she previously missed a portion of action earlier in the year due to a knee injury during India's tour of Bangladesh. She also suffered a wrist fracture while participating in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia in November 2024, which led to her being ruled out of the ODI series against Australia.

Uma Chetry, Bhatia's replacement, is an uncapped player from Assam. Chetry, who has played seven T20Is so far, will now be a part of the India squad for the Australia series and the World Cup. She made her T20I debut against South Africa in July 2024 and has appeared in four T20I matches for India. Chetry was also a part of the India A squad and was initially slated to participate in a warm-up match for the World Cup.

Bhatia's absence will be felt by the Indian team, as she was initially picked as the second-choice wicketkeeper to Richa Ghosh, owing to her performances for India A against Australia A recently. While Bhatia initially started as an opener, the emergence of Pratika Rawal at the top order resulted in her losing her place in the playing XI since October of last year. In fact, Bhatia didn't play a single ODI in 2025.

India is set to host the 13th edition of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka from September 30 to November 2, 2025. The tournament will feature eight teams, with each team playing seven group-stage matches against every other side. The top four teams will then advance to the semi-finals, and the final match will be held in either Navi Mumbai or Colombo. India will begin its campaign against Sri Lanka on September 30, followed by a highly anticipated match against Pakistan on October 5 in Colombo.

The updated India squad for the Women's World Cup 2025 is as follows: Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh Thakur, Arundhati Reddy, Richa Ghosh (WK), Kranti Gaud, Amanjot Kaur, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Sneh Rana, Uma Chetry (WK).
