Wyatt Kaiser is heading into an important phase of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks as the 2025-26 season approaches. Drafted in the third round (81st overall) in 2020, the 23-year-old defenseman is looking to solidify his role on the team.

Kaiser's journey to the NHL began after signing an entry-level deal with the Blackhawks in 2023 following a successful junior year at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He showcased his potential with three points in nine games with Chicago at the end of that season. Since then, Kaiser has been working to find consistency in his game, often moving between Chicago and their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.

Last season, Kaiser played 57 games for the Blackhawks, recording four goals and four assists while averaging just over 18 minutes of ice time per game. He has demonstrated an ability to skate well, carry the puck, and join the offensive rush. However, with increased competition from other young defensemen, he faces a challenge to maintain his position in the lineup.

As a restricted free agent (RFA), Kaiser is currently in negotiations with the Blackhawks for a new contract. While the details are being finalized, there is speculation that the delay is not primarily about money. Some analysts predict a deal of around $2 to $2.5 million per year.

Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, some projections have Kaiser playing alongside Connor Murphy on the Blackhawks' second defensive pairing. Murphy's experience as a defensive defenseman could be beneficial for Kaiser's development. Others in the mix for the Blackhawks' top-six defensemen include Alex Vlasic, Sam Rinzel, Ethan Del Mastro, and Artyom Levshunov.

Kaiser is considered a versatile defenseman, possessing both stay-at-home and puck-moving qualities. He is a cerebral player who is always looking to improve his game. The Blackhawks value his ability to contribute in different roles and his dedication to developing his skills.

With the Blackhawks committed to building through the draft, Kaiser will have the opportunity to play a significant role in the team's future. His progress, along with that of other young defensemen, will be a key storyline for the team in the upcoming season.
