Mauricio Pochettino's USMNT era is officially underway, and all eyes are on his approach to the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup. With the USMNT kicking off their campaign against Trinidad and Tobago, Pochettino's strategy is under scrutiny, especially given recent controversies and the looming 2026 World Cup on home soil.

One of the biggest pre-tournament talking points has been the absence of Christian Pulisic. Pulisic, citing fatigue from demanding seasons with AC Milan, requested to sit out the Gold Cup. However, he expressed a willingness to participate in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland. Pochettino declined this offer, a decision that has sparked debate and criticism.

Pochettino addressed Pulisic's comments head-on, stating firmly, "Players don't need to understand. Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan." He emphasized his role as the head coach, hired by the U.S. Soccer Federation, and not simply a figurehead. He respected Pulisic's reasoning but insisted on the importance of the team adhering to the established plan. Pochettino clarified that he wanted to work with a consistent roster throughout the summer, preparing specifically for the Gold Cup, which he views as a significant competition.

The USMNT's form leading into the Gold Cup has been concerning, marked by four consecutive losses, including a heavy defeat to Switzerland. This poor run has amplified the pressure on Pochettino, with fans and media questioning his leadership. Pochettino has taken responsibility for the team's struggles, acknowledging the criticisms and emphasizing that the primary focus remains preparing for the 2026 World Cup. He hopes that a successful Gold Cup run can build momentum toward that ultimate goal, setting a high bar by declaring the aim is to "Win The World Cup" in 2026.

Despite the off-field noise, Pochettino maintains that the team remains focused on the Gold Cup. He stated, "We are content with our decision. Our decision was to prepare for the Gold Cup and give the opportunity to the players who are going to be involved in the Gold Cup, and to prepare for this tournament. Yes, now we need to move on."

The USMNT's Gold Cup journey began with a resounding 5-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. This win, which snapped a four-game losing streak, provided a much-needed confidence boost. Malik Tillman scored twice, while Patrick Agyemang, Brenden Aaronson, and Haji Wright also found the net. The team's attention now turns to their upcoming match against Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas.

Pochettino's approach to the USMNT emphasizes discipline, adherence to the team plan, and clear communication. While controversies surrounding player selection and absences may continue to surface, the coach is determined to maintain control and guide the team toward success in the Gold Cup and, ultimately, the 2026 World Cup. He has also said that he does not prioritize any players over others and that all players are on equal footing.
