Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey, the towering 7-foot-4 phenom, is facing a reckless driving charge after allegedly speeding at 101 mph in a 55-mph zone in Indiana. The incident occurred on May 1st in Tippecanoe County, where Edey attended Purdue University. According to police reports, an Indiana State Police trooper clocked Edey driving southbound on State Road 25 near West Point in a white 2023 Kia Sorento. The trooper's radar indicated that Edey's vehicle was traveling at 101 mph, and he was observed passing the trooper at 96 mph. The traffic stop occurred after Edey turned eastbound on Tippecanoe County Road 700 South.

Edey reportedly told the officer that he was "trying to pass a vehicle" when asked about the excessive speed, but offered no further explanation. He was issued a citation for reckless driving and is scheduled to appear in court on June 23rd in Tippecanoe County.

The news comes as a surprise to many, as Edey, known for his dominant presence on the basketball court, generally maintains a low profile off the court. His choice of vehicle, a Kia Sorento, also reflects a practical side, contrasting with the flashy cars often associated with professional athletes.

Edey, 23, is coming off his rookie season with the Memphis Grizzlies, where he averaged 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. The Grizzlies selected him with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft after a stellar college career at Purdue. During his time as a Boilermaker, Edey became one of the most dominant big men in college basketball, earning numerous accolades, including two-time consensus National Player of the Year honors in 2023 and 2024. He led Purdue to the 2024 NCAA National Championship game and finished his college career as Purdue's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team following the 2024-25 season.

Off the court, Edey recently underwent surgery on June 10 to address an ankle injury sustained during offseason training. The Grizzlies announced that he would be re-evaluated in four months, suggesting he may miss the start of the upcoming NBA season, which begins on October 21st.

The legal proceedings surrounding the speeding citation could further complicate Edey's offseason. It remains to be seen how this incident will impact his image and standing with the Grizzlies organization. While the misdemeanor charge carries potential penalties, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on his NBA career. However, it serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a professional athlete and a public figure.

Edey's situation is similar to a recent incident involving Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who also received a citation for driving 101 mph in Ohio. These incidents highlight the potential pitfalls that young athletes face as they navigate their newfound fame and fortune.
