Manchester City defender John Stones has recently opened up about the challenges he has faced during his recent injury setbacks, offering a candid glimpse into the mental and emotional toll that injuries can take on a professional athlete. The 31-year-old, who has been a key figure for both Manchester City and the England national team, has endured a frustrating period with recurring injuries that have limited his playing time and led him to question his future in the sport.

Stones admitted that there were moments during his recovery when he doubted if he would be able to return to his previous form. The physical pain and limitations were compounded by the mental strain of being sidelined, leading to what he described as "dark days." He confessed to experiencing self-doubt and questioning why these setbacks were happening to him, despite dedicating his life to football and giving his all both on and off the pitch.

"Yes, there have been points where you think: you've been giving all this effort, you dedicate all your life, especially how I approach or go about my life and football, I give everything on and off the pitch to be here or be ready to play games and… those are the dark days," Stones revealed. "I think everyone's been through them and thinks, 'Why is this happening?' You wish it would go a different path. It's self-doubt, a lot of things."

The defender highlighted the loneliness that can accompany injury recovery, particularly the isolation of training alone, away from the camaraderie of the team. He emphasized the importance of setting goals and maintaining a positive mindset to overcome these challenges. Stones also acknowledged the frustration of being unavailable to help his team, manager, and fans, and the difficulty in finding ways to contribute from the sidelines.

Recurring injuries have plagued Stones' recent seasons, prompting extensive discussions with Manchester City's medical team to identify and address the root causes. He expressed his frustration at not having clear answers, which made the mental aspect even more challenging. Despite the setbacks, Stones has shown resilience and determination to return to full fitness.

"I find it very challenging mentally," Stones admitted. "I have had some very low points in the past season. I just have to (try to) come back but, once you come over those things, you can't really see the end of the tunnel when they keep happening."

Stones emphasized the importance of family support in helping him through these difficult times. He also stressed the need to maintain a broader perspective and remember his values and beliefs to persevere through adversity. Drawing on his experience as a fighter from a young age, Stones has resolved to battle through the challenges and make his efforts worthwhile.

Now back to full fitness, Stones is eager to contribute to Manchester City's upcoming challenges, including the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Although he was an unused substitute in the opening game, he expressed his readiness to play a significant role.

Despite the challenges he has faced, Stones remains determined to make the most of his career and contribute to the success of both Manchester City and England. His openness about his struggles with injury setbacks serves as a reminder of the mental and emotional challenges faced by athletes and the importance of seeking support and maintaining a positive mindset.
