Toronto Maple Leafs forwards Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies have been named to the U.S. Men's Olympic Orientation Camp roster, marking a significant step towards the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy. USA Hockey officially announced the 44-player roster, which includes representatives from 24 different NHL teams. The orientation camp is scheduled to take place August 26-27 in Plymouth, Michigan.

The camp is designed as an administrative and team-building event, with no on-ice activities planned. It serves as an opportunity for players and staff to connect and prepare for the upcoming Olympic Winter Games. The final 25-man roster for the U.S. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team is expected to be announced in early January.

Auston Matthews was among the first six players named to the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team earlier this summer, joined by Jack Eichel, Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk, Quinn Hughes, and Charlie McAvoy. Matthews also captained Team USA at the recent Four Nations Faceoff, leading the team to the gold medal game where they lost in overtime to Canada. His leadership and exceptional performance make him a strong candidate to wear the "C" again at the Olympics. Matthews's consistent elite-level performance, including a remarkable 69 goals and 107 points in the 2024 season, solidifies his position as a key player for Team USA.

Matthew Knies's invitation to the Olympic orientation camp highlights the high regard USA Hockey has for his potential. The 22-year-old winger had a breakout season, scoring 29 goals and 58 points in 78 games. Knies's ability to create offense, drive play forward, and score crucial goals makes him a valuable asset. Knies has international experience, having played for Team USA at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing and the 2022 World Juniors. He recorded a goal and an assist in four games at the 2022 Olympics. Knies's chances of making the final roster will depend on his performance in the upcoming NHL season. A strong start to the season could solidify his place on the Olympic team.

Several other notable players have been invited to the U.S. Men's Olympic Orientation Camp, including Patrick Kane, Ryan McDonagh, Brock Faber, and Jake Sanderson, all of whom have previous Olympic experience. The roster includes a mix of established stars and emerging talents, reflecting the depth of American hockey.

The U.S. Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team will aim to win their first medal since 2010 and their first gold since 1980 at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The tournament is scheduled to take place February 11-22. With a strong blend of skill, experience, and leadership, Team USA is expected to be a top contender for the gold medal. The inclusion of Matthews and Knies on the orientation camp roster signifies the Maple Leafs' contribution to the American Olympic aspirations.
