The Women's Super League (WSL) community is in mourning following the death of former Liverpool Women manager Matt Beard, who passed away on September 20, 2025, at the age of 47. As a mark of respect, Liverpool and Burnley have postponed their upcoming WSL matches.

Beard's death has sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes pouring in for a man widely recognized for his significant contributions to the growth of women's football in England. Liverpool FC expressed their deep shock and sadness, acknowledging Beard's commitment, success, integrity, and warmth.

Matt Beard had a distinguished career managing several prominent women's teams. He had two spells with Liverpool Women, from 2012 to 2015 and again from 2021 to 2025. During his first tenure, he guided the Reds to back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014. In his second spell, he led the team to promotion back to the WSL. Besides Liverpool, Beard also managed Chelsea Women, Millwall Lionesses, West Ham Women, and, most recently, Burnley Women. He also had a stint with Boston Breakers in the United States. He was appointed as Burnley's boss in June 2025 but resigned in August.

The WSL released a statement expressing their condolences to Beard's family and friends, recognizing his instrumental role in the advancement of women's football. The Football Association (FA) also paid tribute to Beard, acknowledging him as a key figure in the growth of the women's game.

Emma Hayes, former Chelsea boss, remembered Beard as a smiling and special man who would be missed. West Ham United also expressed their condolences, acknowledging Beard's contribution to the club, including leading them to the Women's FA Cup final in 2019. Millwall, where Beard began his managerial career, also shared their sadness at his passing.

Beard's achievements were recognized with the WSL Manager of the Season award in both 2013 and 2023-24. His contributions to Liverpool Women earned him the distinction of being the most successful manager in the team's history.

Matt Beard is survived by his wife, Debbie, two children, and a stepson. His brother, Mark Beard, is a former professional footballer.
