Tottenham Hotspur forward Dominic Solanke has undergone minor surgery to address a persistent ankle injury. The news was confirmed by Spurs boss Thomas Frank during a press conference held ahead of their Champions League match against Bodo/Glimt.
Solanke, 28, has been troubled by the ankle issue for a while, with the decision made to undergo a "small procedure" to resolve the problem. He last played for Tottenham on August 23 in a match against Manchester City. He came on as a substitute in that game, playing the final 12 minutes.
The striker's absence from training on Monday further fueled speculation about his fitness. Solanke had returned to training earlier in September but was later withdrawn last week. He was deemed not ready to be involved against Wolves on Saturday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Frank addressed concerns about whether the club should have opted for surgery sooner, clarifying that such decisions aren't straightforward. He said that if they knew surgery was the definite solution a month prior, they likely would have proceeded. He further explained the decision-making process, stating that they acted based on what they believed was the correct course of action, emphasizing that surgery is generally not the preferred option.
As a result of the surgery, Solanke will miss the Champions League game against Bodo/Glimt and the upcoming match against Leeds. The club anticipates providing a clearer timeline for his return after the international break. Frank suggested that he does not expect Solanke's absence to be long.
Several other first-team players will also be absent from the squad traveling to face Bodo/Glimt, including Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma and Randal Kolo Muani. Kolo Muani also missed training due to a dead leg, but Frank seemed optimistic about his recovery. Summer signing Kota Takai is still unavailable, along with long-term absentees Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison. Cristian Romero also did not participate in the training session as a precaution.
