Steven Gerrard's potential Rangers comeback: Managerial vacancy opens after Russell Martin's dismissal at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard Heavily Linked with Rangers Return Following Russell Martin's Dismissal

Glasgow, Scotland – Steven Gerrard is a leading candidate to return to Rangers Football Club after Russell Martin was sacked on Sunday night. The Scottish club terminated Martin's contract following a poor run of form that culminated in a 1-1 draw against Falkirk, leaving the Gers 11 points adrift in the Scottish Premiership after only seven games. The result sparked angry protests from supporters, who surrounded the team bus outside the Falkirk Stadium.

Martin's tenure at Ibrox lasted just four months, having been appointed in June. Despite initial reluctance from the Rangers board to dismiss the 39-year-old, the club's dismal performances in both domestic and European competitions made his position untenable. Rangers have only managed to win one league game this season and Martin’s overall record stood at five wins from 17 competitive matches. The club released a statement acknowledging that results had "not met the club's expectations". Assistant head coach Matt Gill, and first-team coach, Mike Williamson, will also be leaving the club.

Gerrard, who famously led Rangers to their 55th league title in 2021, ending a decade of Celtic dominance, is now strongly being considered for a second spell in charge. His previous success in Glasgow, coupled with a less successful stint at Aston Villa, has generated debate about his managerial abilities. Nevertheless, he remains a popular figure among Rangers fans, a group the club is keen to appease.

The potential reappointment of Gerrard, who recently managed in Saudi Arabia, is expected to be a hugely popular decision. Furthermore, Gerrard is likely aware of the limited opportunities available to him in major European leagues.

According to reports, Gerrard was previously considered for the Rangers job before Martin's appointment. However, he withdrew his candidacy at the time, citing his family's reluctance to relocate from the Middle East. It is also believed that Gerrard would seek assurances regarding financial backing to strengthen the squad if he were to return to Ibrox.

In addition to Gerrard, former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is also reportedly being considered for the Rangers job. The Rangers board are keen to make a swift appointment to try and rescue their season.
