Elmont, NY – In a display of balanced offense, the Winnipeg Jets defeated the New York Islanders 5-2 on Monday, with five different players finding the back of the net. The Jets' victory marked their second consecutive win and their first road win against the Islanders since 2018.
The game started with an early scare for Winnipeg, as Islanders forward Mathew Barzal had a point-blank shot that was denied by Jets goaltender Eric Comrie. However, the Jets quickly found their footing.
Winnipeg's scoring began in the first period, with the team building a lead. Logan Stanley, Morgan Barron, and Nino Niederreiter each contributed a goal. Tanner Pearson also scored in the second period, extending the Jets' lead. Mark Scheifele sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the third period, assisted by Kyle Connor.
The Islanders responded with goals of their own, but were ultimately unable to match Winnipeg's offensive output. Goaltender Eric Comrie made 33 saves, helping to secure the Jets' win. Eight of Winnipeg's twelve forwards registered at least one point in the game. Jonathan Toews recorded his first point in nearly 2 1/2 years with an assist.
The Jets held a 4-2 lead going into the final frame. Despite being outshot 12-11 in the second period, Winnipeg maintained their two-goal advantage for much of the third. With four minutes remaining, Islanders coach Patrick Roy pulled goaltender Ilya Sorokin for an extra attacker, but the Jets capitalized with Scheifele's empty-netter.
Historically, the Islanders have dominated the Jets, winning 43 of 73 games played between the two teams. However, in their most recent matchup, the Jets showcased their offensive depth and defensive resilience, securing a decisive victory.
