Edmonton Oilers fans are rallying in support of Robert Clark, the team's beloved anthem singer, after he shared news of his recent health diagnosis. Clark, who has been a fixture at Rogers Place since 2013, announced on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia.
In a heartfelt video posted to his social media account, Clark explained that he had been experiencing severe joint pain since August, which prompted him to seek medical attention. After a series of tests, including blood work, an ultrasound, and a bone marrow biopsy, doctors confirmed the diagnosis.
"Long story short, after a whole bunch of blood tests, an ultrasound, and a bone marrow biopsy, I've been diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia," Clark said in the video. He reassured fans that while the diagnosis of cancer is never easy, this particular form is "very, very treatable". Hairy cell leukemia is a rare, slow-growing cancer of the blood in which the bone marrow makes too many abnormal lymphocytes.
Clark's treatment is scheduled to begin around November 10 and is expected to last for approximately eight to ten weeks. While a cure is not guaranteed, doctors are optimistic that the treatment will lead to a long-term remission.
Known for his powerful operatic voice, Clark has become a fan favorite for his renditions of "O Canada" at Oilers home games. A tradition that began during the 2017 playoff run involved Clark singing among the fans, further endearing him to the Oilers faithful.
Clark shared that the most challenging aspects of his diagnosis have been the fatigue and the need to be cautious due to a weakened immune system. "I don't go out much just to avoid getting anything if I can," he said. He also humorously noted that he would be offering fist bumps instead of handshakes for the time being.
Despite the difficult news, Clark maintained a positive outlook. "The only thing I ask people for is just send your positive vibes," he said. "I've got a pretty good support system, and I'm very optimistic".
Oilers fans have flooded social media with messages of support for Clark, using platforms such as Reddit and X to express their well wishes. Many fans shared their favorite memories of Clark's performances and offered words of encouragement for his upcoming treatment.
Beyond his contributions to Oilers games, Clark has also been an advocate for mental health awareness. In the past, he has spoken about his own struggles with anxiety and depression, encouraging other men to seek help and open up about their mental health.
Clark's connection with the Oilers community runs deep, and the outpouring of support reflects the impact he has had on fans over the years. As he prepares for treatment, Clark can take comfort in knowing that he has the entire Oilers organization and its dedicated fanbase behind him.
