Jake Walman Returns: Oilers Activate Defenseman From Injured Reserve After Recovery

The Edmonton Oilers received a timely boost to their defensive corps with the activation of defenseman Jake Walman from injured reserve on Monday. Walman, who had been sidelined with an undisclosed injury since September 21, is now set to rejoin the lineup as the Oilers look to snap a three-game losing streak.

The 29-year-old defenseman's absence was keenly felt, as he missed the entirety of the Oilers' preseason and the first six games of the regular season. Initially, it was anticipated that Walman would be ready for the season opener against the Calgary Flames on October 8, but a setback in his recovery forced the team to place him on injured reserve on October 9.

"Getting Jake Walman back is a massive addition for the Oilers who are struggling out of the gate again this season," reports Oilers Daily. His return comes at an opportune moment, with the Oilers (2-3-1) struggling to find consistency early in the season. They are currently on a road trip and are scheduled to face the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

Walman's ability to transition the puck quickly and his defensive prowess are expected to provide a significant lift to the Oilers. Last season, after being acquired from the San Jose Sharks, Walman contributed one goal and seven assists in 15 regular-season games with the Oilers. He also added two goals and eight assists in 22 playoff games, while posting a plus-9 rating.

"His slick breakout passing and strong defensive ability will help the Oilers get the puck up the ice faster and into the O-zone, which is much needed at the moment," according to Oilers Daily.

It is anticipated that Walman will slot into the second defensive pairing alongside Darnell Nurse. The duo had a brief trial during the playoffs last season, where they demonstrated strong underlying numbers, including a 52.1 percent shot attempt share and a 58.2 percent expected goal share. This pairing could provide stability and offensive impetus to the Oilers' blueline.

With Walman's return, some roster adjustments are expected. It is likely that either Troy Stecher or Ty Emberson will be removed from the lineup. The Oilers may need to make further roster moves to accommodate Walman's return, potentially involving a trade, given their depth at forward and defense. However, the recent injury to Kasperi Kapanen may delay any immediate decisions.

Before the season, Walman signed a seven-year, $49 million contract extension with the Oilers, highlighting his importance to the team's long-term plans. In 267 career regular-season NHL games, Walman has recorded 32 goals and 59 assists for 91 points.
