Nottingham Forest have announced the appointment of Sean Dyche as their new head coach, securing his services on a contract until the summer of 2027. The 54-year-old takes the reins at the City Ground following the departure of Ange Postecoglou on Saturday. Dyche, who formerly played in Forest's youth ranks, becomes the third first-team manager for the club this season. He will be supported by former Forest players Ian Woan and Steve Stone, who will join his coaching team.
Dyche has been out of work since leaving Everton earlier in the year. Nottingham Forest has expressed confidence that Dyche possesses "the perfect blend of character, tactical acumen, and proven achievement" to lead the club forward. The club further stated that Dyche's teams are known for defensive organization, resilience, and strength from set pieces, qualities that align well with the current squad's attributes and the club's footballing identity.
Having managed over 330 Premier League matches, Dyche brings a wealth of experience to Nottingham Forest. His career includes a successful stint at Burnley, where he gained recognition for his managerial skills. Dyche joined Burnley in October of the 2012/13 campaign and guided them to 11th position. In his first full season in charge, he led the Clarets to their best-ever start to a season, culminating in promotion to the Premier League after finishing second. Although Burnley was relegated the following season, Dyche immediately steered them back to the top flight, winning the Championship title in the process. He then stabilized the team, maintaining their Premier League status in 2016/17 and subsequently guiding them to the Europa League play-off round.
Prior to his successful spell at Burnley, Dyche began his coaching career at Watford, another of his former clubs. He initially served as the Hornets' Under-18s coach before becoming the assistant manager of the first team in 2009. In the summer of 2011, he took over as manager at Vicarage Road, leading the team to 11th place in the Championship during his one season in charge.
Dyche's first match in charge of Nottingham Forest will be on Thursday night against FC Porto in the Europa League.
