The Indian sporting community is in mourning following the death of Rohini Kalam, a 35-year-old international Jujitsu player who represented India at the Asian Games. Kalam was found dead at her home in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday. Preliminary police investigations suggest the cause of death to be suicide.
Kalam's younger sister, Roshni Kalam, discovered her body at their residence in Arjun Nagar, Radhaganj. After discovering her sister, Roshni alerted other family members and the police. Kalam was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. As of now, no suicide note has been recovered from the scene.
Rohini Kalam was not only an accomplished athlete but also a martial arts coach at a private school in Ashta, near Dewas. She had returned home on Saturday. According to family members, Kalam seemed to be her normal self on Sunday morning. She had breakfast and then received a phone call after which she went into her room and locked the door. When she did not come out for a long time, her sister broke open the door with an iron rod and found her hanging.
Kalam had a successful career in Jujitsu, representing India at the Asian Games and winning a bronze medal at an international competition in Abu Dhabi. She also served as the general secretary of the MP Jujutsu Association.
While the exact reason for Kalam's death remains unclear, her sister, Roshni, has suggested that work-related stress may have been a contributing factor. According to reports, Rohini had spoken to her sister about the stress she was experiencing from her school principal. Furthermore, it has been reported that Kalam had undergone surgery for a tumor in her abdomen five months prior. However, her family stated that her health condition was good and nothing indicated that she was under any job-related pressure.
The news of Rohini Kalam's death has sent shockwaves through the sports community, with many expressing their condolences and remembering her achievements. Her sudden demise is a significant loss for Indian Jujitsu.
