Arsenal progressed to the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Crystal Palace, with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga proving to be the hero. The Gunners won 8-7 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in normal time. Arrizabalaga's decisive save denied Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix, sending Arsenal through to the next round where they will face Chelsea.
The match, a rematch of last year's quarter-final, was a hard-fought contest. Arsenal dominated the first half, but Crystal Palace's second-string goalkeeper, Walter Benítez, was in inspired form, making several fine saves to keep his team in the game. Crystal Palace were playing theirmatch after a request to reschedule the game because of their European commitments. Arsenal made eight changes to the side that played against Everton.
Arsenal took the lead late in the game when Lacroix scored an own goal under pressure from William Saliba after Bukayo Saka's corner wasn't cleared. However, Marc Guéhi equalized for Crystal Palace in the fifth minute of injury time, forcing a penalty shootout. Chris Richards was carried off for Palace with a nasty gash to his ankle.
The first 15 penalties were all converted successfully before Arrizabalaga saved Lacroix's spot-kick to win the shootout for Arsenal. Before Lacroix's own goal, Gabriel Jesus came close to scoring for Arsenal. Noni Madueke had an early chance for Arsenal, but shot straight at Benítez. Tyrick Mitchell had a counter-attack opportunity for Palace but shot over the bar. Martinelli's cross found Gabriel Jesus, but Benítez saved his header.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was forced to field Riccardo Calafiori at centre-back after Pierro Hincapié picked up a knock. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner admitted he had to select virtually the same side that was beaten by Leeds. Teenager Jaydee Canvot started in an unfamiliar role at right wingback and was given a tough time by Gabriel Martinelli.
