Shafali Verma's explosive batting display, complemented by a strong performance from the spin bowlers, propelled India to a dominant seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second T20I on December 23, 2025. This win gives India a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Sri Lanka, after losing the toss and being put in to bat, struggled to build momentum against India's disciplined bowling attack and posted a modest total of 128/9 in their 20 overs. Only Chamari Athapaththu (31) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (33) offered some resistance. The spin trio of Sneh Rana, Shree Charani and Vaishnavi Sharma restricted the Lankan batters. Sneh Rana was particularly economical, conceding just 11 runs in her four overs and taking the crucial wicket of Athapaththu. Vaishnavi Sharma and Shree Charani both picked up two wickets each.
In response, India chased down the target of 129 in just 11.5 overs, finishing at 129/3. Shafali Verma led the charge with a blistering, unbeaten 69 off just 34 balls, which included 11 fours and one six. Despite Smriti Mandhana falling early for 14, Verma continued to attack. Jemimah Rodrigues contributed a quickfire 26 off 15 balls, forming a 58-run partnership with Verma. Richa Ghosh sealed the victory with a single.
Verma's aggressive approach put the Sri Lankan bowlers under pressure from the start. She brought up her half-century off just 27 balls, the joint-second fastest fifty by an Indian woman against Sri Lanka in WT20Is. India reached 113 runs in the first 10 overs, their highest total after the first 10 overs in Women's T20Is.
With this win, India has taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series and will look to continue their winning momentum in the third T20I. The victory also serves as a confidence booster for the team as they prepare for the T20 World Cup 2026. India has nine T20Is to go before the marquee event in June 2026.
