Mexico City, October 26, 2025 – The Formula 1 World Championship battle has tightened to a mere single point after a thrilling Mexico City Grand Prix. Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, seized a dominant victory, converting his pole position into a commanding lead and ultimately taking the checkered flag a staggering 30 seconds ahead of the competition. This win propels him to the top of the drivers' standings with 357 points.
Norris's teammate, Oscar Piastri, finished fifth, a result that sees him relinquish the championship lead, now sitting just one point behind with 356. The young Australian driver struggled to match Norris's pace throughout the race, a fact the McLaren team is still trying to understand.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished third, battling hard to gain positions after a difficult start. The reigning champion remains a strong contender, currently third in the standings with 321 points, 36 points adrift of Norris. While a podium finish is a good result, Verstappen will be looking to close the gap in the remaining races to secure his fifth consecutive title.
The Mexico City Grand Prix delivered excitement beyond the top three. Oliver Bearman of Haas secured a career-best fourth-place finish, matching Haas's best-ever result in F1. The young Brit drove a superb race, holding off Piastri in the closing stages to secure the impressive result. His teammate Esteban Ocon, added to Haas' points haul finishing in ninth.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished second, claiming valuable points in the constructor's championship battle. Lewis Hamilton, also driving for Ferrari, had a more challenging race, finishing eighth after a ten-second penalty for gaining an advantage early in the race.
Mercedes secured a double points finish with Kimi Antonelli in sixth and George Russell in seventh. Rounding out the points-scoring positions was Gabriel Bortoleto for Kick Sauber, claiming the final point in tenth.
Several drivers failed to score points, including Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull, Alex Albon of Williams, and both Aston Martin drivers. Carlos Sainz of Williams retired towards the end of the race.
The race wasn't without its incidents. A late virtual safety car (VSC) added to the drama, preventing Verstappen from attempting to overtake Leclerc for second place. Liam Lawson was the first retiree from the race. Nico Hulkenberg also retired early on due to technical issues.
The revised top 8 in the drivers' championship standings are:
- Lando Norris (McLaren) – 357
- Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – 356

- George Russell (Mercedes) – 258
- Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – 210
- Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) – 146
