Shreyas Iyer's health improves after ICU stint: Sydney update reveals positive recovery with friends.

Sydney, October 27, 2025 – In a positive turn of events, Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a Sydney hospital, where he was admitted following a fielding injury during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025. Sources indicate that friends have joined him, offering a morale boost to the recovering cricketer.

Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The incident occurred when he took a catch to dismiss Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey. While the catch was impressive, Iyer immediately felt discomfort, and was assisted off the field by the medical team. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

Initial assessments suggested a rib injury, but scans later revealed a laceration to his spleen. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the diagnosis in a statement, noting that Iyer is medically stable and responding well to treatment.

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well," the BCCI stated.

According to sources, the injury was serious, and prompt medical attention was crucial. "The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal," a source told PTI.

The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring Iyer's condition. An Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney to assess his day-to-day progress. While it is difficult to provide a definite timeline for his return to competitive cricket, he is expected to remain under observation for two to seven days, depending on his recovery.

Iyer, who made his international debut in 2017, has played 138 matches for India, scoring 4832 runs. His presence will be missed by the team. India won the third ODI by nine wickets.

The news of Iyer being moved out of the ICU and joined by friends is a welcome sign, indicating positive progress in his recovery. Further updates on his condition are awaited as he continues to receive medical care and support in Sydney.
