Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior has publicly apologized to Real Madrid fans, his teammates, the club, and the president for his behavior after being substituted during the recent El Clasico match against Barcelona. The apology comes after a visibly upset Vinicius was taken off the pitch with approximately fifteen minutes left in the game, won 2-1 by Real Madrid.
Vinicius's reaction to the substitution included a heated exchange with head coach Xabi Alonso and a direct route to the locker room, seemingly ignoring Alonso's handshake. He later returned to the bench, but the controversy had already ignited. Reports even suggest the Brazilian said, "Me, coach? Coach, me? It's always me. I'm leaving the team. It's better I leave". The incident has raised questions about the relationship between the player and coach.
In a statement released on his social media accounts, Vinicius stated, "Today, I want to apologize to all Real Madrid supporters for my reaction when I was substituted in El Clásico". He continued, "Just as I've already done in person during today's training, I also want to apologize again to my teammates, club, and president".
Vinicius attributed his actions to his intense competitive spirit and passion for the club. "Sometimes passion gets the better of me because I always want to win and help my team," he explained. "My competitive character stems from the love I feel for this club and everything it represents". He promised to continue fighting for Real Madrid, as he has done since joining the team.
Alonso initially attempted to downplay the situation in the post-match press conference, assuring the media that the matter would be handled internally. "There are different personalities in every squad, and you have to understand them," the coach stated.
Notably, Vinicius's apology did not directly mention Xabi Alonso, fueling speculation about a potential rift between the two. Some reports suggest the relationship has reached a new low.
The Brazilian international has only completed the full 90 minutes in three games this season and has been substituted off seven times. He has also started as a substitute in three matches. This limited time on the pitch may be a contributing factor to Vinicius's frustration.
Despite the controversy, Vinicius is under contract with Real Madrid until June 2027. While there would undoubtedly be interest in acquiring his services if he were to leave, his substantial contract, reportedly around £300,000 a week, and a likely nine-figure transfer fee, could limit the number of potential suitors.
