Trent Alexander-Arnold is preparing for an emotional return to Anfield as Real Madrid face Liverpool in the Champions League this week. This will be his first match back at Liverpool since his move to the Spanish giants in June 2025. The 27-year-old right-back departed from his boyhood club after failing to agree to a new contract, a decision that sparked mixed reactions from Liverpool fans.
In May, sections of the Anfield crowd booed Alexander-Arnold in his first appearance since confirming his departure. However, he also received a standing ovation during his final match when Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy. Reflecting on his departure, Alexander-Arnold acknowledged the complexity of leaving the club he had been associated with for two decades. He stated it was about seeking a new experience and challenge in his career, rather than dissatisfaction with Liverpool.
Ahead of the Champions League clash, Alexander-Arnold addressed the anticipated reception from the Anfield faithful. "Whichever way I'm received is the decision of the fans," he said. "I'll always love the club, I'll always be a fan of the club. I'll always be thankful for the opportunities and the things we achieved together, they'll live with me forever". He emphasized that regardless of the reception, his feelings towards Liverpool would remain unchanged, cherishing the memories created during his time there.
Alexander-Arnold also confirmed that he would not celebrate if he scores against Liverpool out of respect for his former club. Since joining Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold's time has been marked by periods in and out of the starting lineup. A hamstring injury in September sidelined him for six weeks, and he was an unused substitute in Real Madrid's recent El Clasico victory. However, with Dani Carvajal undergoing knee surgery, Alexander-Arnold may have an opportunity to secure more playing time.
He admitted that England teammate Jude Bellingham influenced his move to Real Madrid. "[Bellingham] said it was incredible, and he'd never seen anything like it," Alexander-Arnold stated. "The drive from the whole club, to win and the expectation to win... I needed a change for me. I wanted a new challenge on and off the pitch".
Liverpool, currently seventh in the Premier League, are coming off a 0-3 defeat to Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup. Their next match is against Aston Villa in the Premier League.
