In a thrilling turn of events at the ICC Women's World Cup 2025 final, Shafali Verma revealed that a conversation with Sachin Tendulkar moments before the match against South Africa significantly impacted her performance. The young opener played a pivotal role in India's historic win, scoring a match-winning 87 runs off 78 balls and taking two crucial wickets.
Verma, who was named Player of the Match, emphasized the importance of mental composure and clarity in big games. She credited the presence of the cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar in the stands for providing her with a special boost. "When I saw Sachin sir, I got a different boost," Shafali said. "He always gives me confidence. Seeing him there inspired me to give my best," she added.
The 21-year-old emphasized that she focused solely on scoring runs and contributing to the team's victory, not letting anything distract her from the task at hand. She revealed that she frequently speaks with Tendulkar, who always provides her with the confidence she needs to succeed.
Shafali's journey to the World Cup final was not without its challenges. Initially left out of the squad, she was called in as a replacement for the injured Pratika Rawal just before the semi-final against Australia. Despite a shaky start in the semi-final, where she scored 10 runs, she seized the opportunity in the final, demonstrating her resilience and determination.
Her explosive innings, alongside Smriti Mandhana, set a strong foundation for India's innings in the final. The duo put on a 104-run opening stand, with Shafali leading the charge. Following Mandhana's departure, Shafali continued her assault on the South African bowlers, missing out on her century by just 13 runs.
Adding another dimension to her game, Shafali also contributed with the ball, taking two important wickets. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's decision to give Shafali the ball proved to be a masterstroke, as she dismissed Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp, turning the tide in India's favor. Kaur revealed that Shafali had expressed her willingness to bowl, stating, "If you give me the ball, I'm going to bowl 10 overs for the team".
Shafali's performance was a redemption tale, marking a remarkable comeback after being out of the ODI team for a year. She had been the top run-getter in the Senior Women's T20 League, scoring 341 runs at a strike rate of 182.35 for Haryana.
After receiving the Player of the Match award, Shafali said, "I said at the start that God has sent me here to do something good, and that was reflected today". She also credited the unwavering support of her parents, brother, friends, and teammates for keeping her motivated.
India's victory in the World Cup final marks a historic moment for Indian women's cricket. It highlights the team's growth, skill, and resilience on the world stage. Shafali Verma's all-round performance and her reliance on Sachin Tendulkar's advice will be remembered as a key factor in India's triumph.
