Report: Lucknow Super Giants Set to Name Ex-Australian Cricket Star as New Head Coach

The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are reportedly set to appoint former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody as their new global director of cricket. This move will see the 60-year-old veteran oversee the operations of the Super Giants group of franchises, including LSG in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Durban Super Giants (DSG) in SA20, and their Manchester-based franchise in The Hundred.

Moody, who celebrated his 60th birthday in October, is considered one of the most accomplished coaches in the game, bringing over two decades of experience with international and franchise teams. He guided the Oval Invincibles to three consecutive titles in The Hundred competition. He also led Desert Vipers to runner-up finishes in the International League T20 (ILT20) in both 2023 and 2025.

The RP Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG), owners of LSG, have yet to officially announce Moody's appointment, and the details of his contract remain unconfirmed. Moody's arrival at LSG marks his return to the IPL since leaving Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2022. He previously served as SRH's head coach from 2013 to 2019, during which the team won the 2016 title. He later returned to the franchise as director of cricket in 2021.

At LSG, Moody will be taking over the role previously held by former Indian pace legend Zaheer Khan in the IPL 2025 season. Zaheer Khan's contract was for two seasons, but he parted ways with the team prematurely in September.

This appointment also reunites Moody with his former Western Australia and Australia teammate Justin Langer, who remains the head coach of LSG. He will also be working alongside Kane Williamson, who was recently appointed as the franchise's strategic advisor. Williamson, the former captain of New Zealand, replaces Zaheer Khan in that role.

LSG has seen a mix of success and challenges in its IPL journey. The team reached the playoffs in their first two seasons (2022 and 2023) but failed to reach the final four in the subsequent two seasons. In 2024 and 2025, they finished 7th in the points table.

In other team news, Justin Langer is retained as head coach, and Carl Crowe has been appointed as spin coach. The franchise is owned by RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, and Ekana Cricket Stadium serves as their home ground. Rishabh Pant captains the team. Key retentions before the mega auction included Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Mohsin Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mayank Yadav. Notable releases included KL Rahul, Krunal Pandya, Marcus Stoinis, and Quinton de Kock.
