Liverpool manager Arne Slot has called for patience regarding Florian Wirtz's adaptation to the Premier League, following the midfielder's high-profile summer transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz, who arrived at Anfield for a reported £116 million, has yet to find his stride in English football, leading to some early scrutiny.
Slot, however, remains steadfast in his belief in the 22-year-old German international, emphasizing that Wirtz has brought "exactly what we expected". Speaking ahead of Liverpool's Champions League clash against Real Madrid, Slot addressed concerns about Wirtz's slow start, attributing it to the intensity and physicality of the Premier League compared to the Bundesliga.
"I've said this quite a lot, not being used as an excuse, but many times we have to play three games in seven days with only two days' rest in between," Slot explained. He highlighted the demanding schedule and the adjustment required for players moving from other leagues. "Nine out of 10 people would agree the Premier League is a bit more intense (than the Bundesliga), especially in all the games, so if you look at that then he already played a lot," the Dutchman added.
Despite not yet registering a goal or assist in the Premier League, Wirtz has shown glimpses of his quality, including two assists in a recent Champions League match against Eintracht Frankfurt. Slot pointed out that Wirtz has been "unlucky with the end product either by himself or his team-mates". He also noted specific instances where Wirtz's contributions could have easily led to goals, such as a flick to Mohamed Salah in a match against Chelsea.
Slot drew comparisons between Wirtz's situation and that of other players who initially struggled in the Premier League before becoming stars. He referenced Ryan Gravenberch, another Liverpool midfielder who took time to adjust to the league's intensity. Slot also compared Wirtz's adaptation process to that of Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne, who also endured a slow start in the Premier League.
"For me, he exactly brought what we expected – a player who created a lot for the team," Slot stated. He acknowledged that while goals are important, Wirtz's overall contribution to the team's attacking play has been significant.
The Liverpool manager also addressed speculation about Wirtz's future, dismissing any suggestions that the club is considering selling him. Recent reports linked Wirtz with a potential move to Real Madrid in 2026, fueled by rumors of a reunion with former Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso. However, Slot affirmed Liverpool's commitment to Wirtz and their belief in his long-term potential.
Slot's plea for patience comes amid reports that Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro believes Wirtz would have preferred a move to Real Madrid, had an offer materialized from the Spanish giants. Despite this, Wirtz chose Liverpool, and Slot is determined to help him succeed at Anfield.
As Wirtz continues to adapt to the Premier League's demands, Slot is confident that the midfielder's talent and impact will become increasingly evident. The manager's emphasis on patience and his belief in Wirtz's abilities suggest that Liverpool are prepared to give the young German the time he needs to flourish in his new environment.
