Royals Bolster Roster with Acquisition of Jonathan India

In a move aimed at injecting more offensive firepower and on-base percentage into their lineup, the Kansas City Royals have acquired second baseman Jonathan India from the Cincinnati Reds. The trade, finalized on November 22, 2024, sees the Royals sending right-handed pitcher Brady Singer to Cincinnati in exchange for India and outfielder Joey Wiemer.

India, 27, is coming off a 2024 season where he batted .248 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs in a career-high 151 games. Perhaps more importantly for the Royals, India demonstrated an excellent eye at the plate, drawing 80 walks, which tied for fifth-most in the majors. His ability to get on base makes him an ideal candidate to fill the Royals' leadoff spot, a position they struggled to solidify in 2024.

"We felt we had starting pitching depth and we needed (a player) like India, an on-base guy," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

The acquisition of India signals a clear upgrade at second base for the Royals. While incumbent Michael Massey showed flashes of potential, his overall production in 2024 didn't quite match India's consistency. India has a career .355 on-base percentage, compared to Massey's .294. Though neither player is known for their defensive prowess, India's offensive upside and experience hitting at the top of the order make him a valuable addition.

Beyond his on-field contributions, India is also known as a positive clubhouse presence. His energy and leadership could provide a boost to the Royals' team chemistry as they look to contend in the American League Central.

Singer, 28, is a homegrown talent who has been a mainstay in the Royals' rotation for several years. While he has shown flashes of brilliance, he has also struggled with inconsistency, posting a career 4.28 ERA. However, he has recorded a sub-4.00 ERA in two of the past three seasons, showcasing his potential as a quality mid-rotation arm.

The trade represents a calculated risk for the Royals, who are betting that India's offensive contributions will outweigh the loss of Singer's innings and potential. Given the Royals' existing pitching depth and their need for a reliable leadoff hitter, the move appears to address a clear area of need.

The Royals also acquired outfielder Joey Wiemer in the deal. Wiemer, 25, is a promising young player who has shown flashes of potential in the minor leagues. While he is not expected to be an immediate impact player, he could provide valuable depth and contribute as a role player.

With India now in the fold, the Royals' lineup has the potential to be significantly more dynamic in 2025. His ability to get on base will create more opportunities for Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez to drive in runs, potentially leading to a more potent and consistent offense.
