Morkel reveals the strategy behind Arshdeep's sporadic T20I appearances for India, emphasizing long-term goals.

India's bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has addressed concerns regarding Arshdeep Singh's intermittent appearances in the T20I squad, despite the left-arm seamer being the highest wicket-taker for India in the format. Arshdeep, who recently picked up 3/35 in his comeback match against Australia, earning him the Player of the Match award, has often found himself on the bench, leading to questions about the team's selection strategy.

Morkel explained that Arshdeep's omission from the playing XI in the first two T20Is against Australia was a strategic decision by the team management. The team aimed to explore different bowling combinations with the T20 World Cup 2026 on the horizon. Morkel emphasized the importance of evaluating how players react under pressure in variousmatch scenarios, especially with limited games available before the major tournament. By experimenting with different combinations, the team aims to identify players who can deliver in high-pressure situations.

"It is not easy," Morkel acknowledged, referring to the challenges players face when dealing with selection decisions. "There will always be disappointment in terms of players and selection, but that is something that, as a player, is uncontrollable". He said that the team management consistently encourages players to maintain a strong work ethic and be prepared for opportunities when they arise.

Morkel stated that Arshdeep is aware of the "bigger picture," where the team is trying out different combinations. He lauded Arshdeep as a world-class bowler, acknowledging his valuable contributions, particularly his knack for taking wickets in the powerplay overs. Morkel said that the team is also looking at other combinations.

Morkel further highlighted the necessity for adaptability and the importance of having players who can fulfill different roles within the team. He noted that teams worldwide are exploring various options to ensure they have the flexibility to adapt to different match situations. "You need to have options available," Morkel stated. "I think every team, if you look across the world, is playing around with options". He emphasized that it is crucial to test players in diverse roles to assess their ability to handle pressure, which is essential for a World Cup.
