James Overy: Manchester United Youth Player Receives Unexpected Socceroos Selection, a Surprise National Team Debut

In a stunning turn of events, Manchester United's 17-year-old right-back, James Overy, has been named in the Socceroos squad for their upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. The call-up, announced by head coach Tony Popovic, comes as a surprise, considering Overy is yet to make a senior appearance for his club.

Overy's inclusion is part of a broader squad revamp, with Popovic making 11 changes from the team that played against the USA and Canada last month. These friendlies, scheduled for November 14 in Houston against Venezuela and November 19 in New York against Colombia, are crucial for Australia's preparation for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Moreover, the Socceroos will be aiming to improve their world ranking to secure a favorable draw in the World Cup on December 5.

Born on November 9, 2007, Overy, who will turn 18 this weekend, has already garnered attention as one of the world's top young talents. He has been training with Manchester United's first team under coach Ruben Amorim, reportedly impressing the Red Devils' manager.

Overy's journey began in Australia with Perth Glory, where he played in a friendly against West Ham United at the age of 15. His family then moved to Devon, England, and he joined Newton Abbot Spurs. Manchester United offered him a scholarship deal in May 2024, which he accepted in June, leading to a FIFA investigation due to the timing of his move from Newton Abbot Spurs. The transfer was eventually cleared in September 2024.

Eligible to represent both Australia and Scotland, Overy has already featured for Scotland's U-19 team and Australia's U-18 and U-20 teams. This Socceroos call-up marks a significant step in his international career.

Popovic has also included six other uncapped players in the squad, including four from the A-League Men: Al Hassan Toure and Paul Okon-Engstler from Sydney FC, and Kai Trewin and Patrick Beach from Melbourne City. Adelaide United winger Craig Goodwin also returns to the national team. Deni Juric, the brother of former Socceroo Tomi Juric, has received his first call-up as well.

Overy's inclusion highlights the increasing number of A-League academy players making their mark, with 21 past or present players in the squad having come through the A-League system. This injection of youth and fresh talent signals an exciting phase for the Socceroos as they build towards the 2026 World Cup.
