Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an update on the fitness of midfielder Rodri ahead of their highly anticipated Premier League clash against Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Rodri, who won the 2024 Ballon d'Or, has been a crucial player for Guardiola's side, but a serious knee injury last season significantly hampered his progress. After recovering from that injury, he has faced further setbacks, including a recent muscular issue sustained against Brentford. This has limited him to just two full 90-minute appearances in eight matches across all competitions this season.
Rodri was notably absent from the Manchester City squad that defeated Borussia Dortmund 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday. Guardiola explained that he didn't want to risk Rodri, as the player himself "didn't feel perfect".
Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Friday, Guardiola remained cautious about Rodri's availability for the Liverpool game. "We will see tomorrow, but I think we will not take a risk," Guardiola stated. He indicated that a return after the international break is more likely, emphasizing the need for Rodri to feel "strong and fit" before being thrust back into demanding game situations.
Guardiola acknowledged Rodri's importance to the team, stating, "Still we are in November, and the best part of the season is ahead of us and we need him". He also noted the absence of other key players, saying, "Still we're playing without the Ballon d'Or of two seasons ago, a massively important player for us, and we are desperate to have him back".
In Rodri's absence, Nico Gonzalez is expected to continue in the defensive midfield role. Guardiola expressed confidence in Gonzalez, saying he is "becoming a really good, important player". He added that Gonzalez's recent performances have given the team confidence.
Despite Rodri's absence, Guardiola has shown confidence in his squad's ability to compete, emphasizing the importance of patience with Rodri's recovery to ensure he returns at full strength.
