Arizona State edges No. 20 Colorado College in a thrilling 4-3 shootout victory after a tied game.

Tempe, AZ – In a thrilling contest at Mullett Arena, the Arizona State Sun Devils rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat the No. 20 Colorado College Tigers 4-3 in a shootout. While the game officially counts as a tie in NCAA standings, the Sun Devils earned two crucial NCHC points with the shootout victory.

The Sun Devils found themselves in an early hole after surrendering three goals in the first period. Colorado College jumped out to a quick lead, with goals from sophomore forward Owen Beckner and junior forward Drew Montgomery. The Tigers extended their lead with a power-play goal from sophomore forward Gavin Lindberg.

Despite the rocky start, ASU freshman goaltender Samuel Urban settled in and played strong for the remainder of the game. "I gave a couple s* ones,” Urban said, laughing. “So I try to stay positive."

The Sun Devils began their comeback in the second period, sparked by a goal. The momentum continued into the third period, as ASU scored two more goals to tie the game at 3-3, forcing overtime.

Neither team was able to find the net in the overtime period, leading to a shootout. ASU ultimately prevailed 4-3 in the shootout, securing the victory and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Head coach Greg Powers acknowledged the team's slow start but praised their resilience. “I guess, as embarrassed as I was about our effort in the first I'm even more proud of how we came back and found a way to get two points tonight,” Powers said. “Really proud of the guys.”

The Sun Devils are back at Mullett Arena after winning the 2025 Ice Breaker Tournament against Alaska-Fairbanks on Oct. 11. Coming off a road split at the Miami RedHawks last weekend, Arizona State returned to Mullett Arena for a weekend series with the No. 20 ranked Tigers of Colorado College.

Colorado College won the season series last year, winning three of the four matchups including the series finale from Mullett that saw the Tigers score all 5 of their goals in the 3rd period on the way to a 5-4 comeback win.

Looking ahead, Arizona State will aim to build on this win as they continue their season. Meanwhile, Colorado College will look to rebound from the defeat and maintain their position as a ranked team.
