Tottenham Player Faces Renewed Laughing Gas Accusations: Is This a Recurring Issue for the Club?

Yves Bissouma, the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, is under investigation for allegedly inhaling nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," for the second time. The club has launched an internal probe after a video surfaced showing Bissouma inhaling the substance from a balloon at a party in November. This incident has sparked disciplinary concerns and raised questions about his future with the club.

The footage, obtained by The Sun newspaper, shows the 29-year-old midfielder inhaling the gas. The woman who reported the incident stated that she found it hard to believe it was Bissouma in the video, considering his history. She noted that he was nonchalantly holding the balloon and inhaling.

Possession of nitrous oxide for recreational use is an offense in the UK, classified as a Class C drug since 2023. The recreational use of laughing gas has been a criminal offence in the UK since 2023 and is listed as a Class C drug. Penalties can include up to two years in prison. A Tottenham spokesperson told PA that they are looking into the events and it will be dealt with as an internal matter.

This is not the first time Bissouma has faced such allegations. In August 2024, he was caught consuming the substance, leading to a one-match suspension from Spurs. At the time, Bissouma apologized for a "severe lack of judgement" and acknowledged his responsibilities as a footballer and role model. He stated he understood how serious the situation was and the health risks involved.

Bissouma's future at Tottenham has been uncertain. He has not made an appearance this season under manager Thomas Frank. He was also left out of Spurs' UEFA Super Cup squad in August for persistent lateness during pre-season. Furthermore, an ankle injury sustained on international duty has kept him sidelined. Despite making 44 appearances last season and playing the full 90 minutes in Tottenham's Europa League final win over Manchester United, his behavior has overshadowed his achievements.

The timing of this incident is particularly challenging for Tottenham, as they prepare for the Champions League knockout stage. The team has not secured a victory since a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in November. The controversy has dampened the anticipation surrounding Son Heung-min's anticipated "farewell return" before his transfer to LAFC.

Local media outlets have suggested that Bissouma could face further disciplinary actions, including suspensions and fines. The club has released an official statement confirming the internal investigation and stating that all measures will be handled according to internal procedures.
