Jamie Carragher has delivered a scathing critique of Liverpool's star forward, Mohamed Salah, following the Egyptian's outburst after the recent 3-3 draw against Leeds United. The Sky Sports analyst and former Liverpool defender didn't hold back, labeling Salah's behavior as "embarrassing" and demanding an immediate apology.
The controversy stems from Salah's harsh criticism of Liverpool's manager, Arne Slot, where he claimed their relationship was "broken" and expressed deep disappointment with his current role in the team. Salah revealed his frustration at being dropped from the starting eleven for the past three matches, only appearing as a substitute for a total of 45 minutes. He believes he has been unfairly treated, especially considering his contributions to the club over the years, stating that the club had "thrown him under the bus". Salah also alluded to promises made by the club during the summer that have not been fulfilled, contributing to his discontent.
Carragher, however, didn't sympathize with Salah's grievances. He acknowledged Salah's status as "the king of Egypt, the greatest winger in Premier League history" but insisted that his recent performances have been subpar. Carragher argued that Salah was only complaining when it affected him personally. He went on to say that legends like Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush would never have behaved in such a manner, branding Salah's actions as "childish".
Carragher didn't stop there, stating that Salah should be "hanging his head in shame and apologising to Arne for his conduct". He suggested that Salah's rant was a "disgrace" and that he had "choreographed" the moment to maximize the damage after a disappointing result.
Salah anticipated Carragher's criticism, even stating that Carragher would "go for him again," a stance he claimed to accept. Salah's response was prompted by being left out of the starting lineup for the third consecutive game. He expressed disbelief at being benched for the entire 90 minutes, a rare occurrence in his career. He feels as though he is being deliberately targeted, with someone wanting him to take the blame for the team's struggles.
Liverpool currently sit ninth in the Premier League, ten points off the top of the table. This underwhelming performance has led to increased pressure on both the players and manager Arne Slot. Despite significant investment in the team, including breaking the British transfer record twice in the summer, the results on the pitch have not matched the financial outlay.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that Carragher had previously criticized Salah's performances, suggesting that his "legs had gone" and that he was not replicating his form from the previous season. These comments were met with disagreement from figures like Sam Allardyce, who defended Salah and accused Carragher of seeking attention.
The coming weeks are likely to be turbulent for Liverpool, as tensions between Salah and the club, as well as with pundits like Carragher, continue to simmer.
