Liverpool, UK - In the wake of Mohamed Salah's controversial comments and subsequent omission from the squad facing Inter Milan in the Champions League, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has publicly backed under-fire manager Arne Slot. Alisson's comments are the first public statement from a Liverpool player addressing the situation, breaking the silence within the dressing room.
The controversy stems from Salah's explosive post-match interview following Liverpool's disappointing 3-3 draw against Leeds United, where he remained an unused substitute. Salah claimed he felt "thrown under the bus" by the club and hinted at a potential departure, further fueling speculation about his future at Anfield. Slot responded by leaving Salah out of the squad for the crucial Champions League match against Inter Milan, a decision that has intensified the situation.
Speaking ahead of the Inter Milan game, Alisson addressed the media, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation. He emphasized his personal relationship with Salah, highlighting their long history as teammates, dating back to their time together at Roma. "It's not an easy situation," Alisson admitted. "As a group, we take it as best as we can. We have a personal relationship with him... He's a great guy, great character, he's a legend for Liverpool FC. We achieved so many things together and of course personally it's not something that makes me happy".
Despite his personal connection with Salah, Alisson made it clear that the team's priority is the club. He suggested that Salah's omission from the squad was a direct consequence of his public outburst. "Him not being available is a consequence of what he did. He's smart enough to know that," Alisson stated.
When asked directly if he still supported Arne Slot, Alisson responded emphatically: "Of course, yes". He defended Slot's performance, reminding everyone of Liverpool's Premier League title win last season under his leadership. "Before Arne came in everyone was talking about the huge challenge," Alisson noted. "It looks like everyone takes for granted what we achieved last season". He added, "That should be enough but we believe in his knowledge, his style of playing, that he is capable of helping us to turn around this situation".
Alisson also conveyed the team's and the club's trust in Slot, stating, "It's not only about ourselves, but that's the situation with the club as well, they trust him". He also took shared responsibility, adding, "It's not only his responsibility, as a player I share it with him".
While acknowledging the sensitivity surrounding Salah's situation, Alisson expressed his hope for a resolution that benefits both the player and the club. "I really hope he plays for Liverpool again. But that's between Mo and the club, not me," Alisson said. "We as his teammates and his friends we hope the best thing happens for him, but as Liverpool FC players we want the best for the club. We want a win-win for him and the club".
Alisson revealed that he intends to have a private conversation with Salah to discuss the situation further. "I will have a conversation with him but it's going to be private because it's personal," he explained.
The situation remains tense as Liverpool prepares for their Champions League clash with Inter Milan. Alisson's public backing of Arne Slot, however, provides a glimpse into the Liverpool dressing room's stance amidst the controversy, emphasizing their support for the manager and their desire to move forward as a united team.
