Canadiens' Urgent Need: Exploring a Trade Reunion with Phillip Danault to Bolster Their Roster.

In a move that has sent ripples of both excitement and skepticism through the hockey world, the Montreal Canadiens have re-acquired center Phillip Danault from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a 2026 second-round draft pick. The trade, finalized late Friday night just before the NHL's holiday roster freeze, marks a return to Montreal for Danault, who previously played for the Canadiens from 2015 to 2021.

General Manager Kent Hughes addressed the media on Saturday, emphasizing the experience Danault brings to the team. "He's been here before. I think people in this market know what he is as a hockey player," Hughes stated. He also expressed optimism that a return to Montreal could revitalize Danault, helping him regain the form he displayed during his earlier tenure with the Canadiens and in Los Angeles prior to this season.

The Canadiens' current predicament, with key centers Alex Newhook and Kirby Dach sidelined due to long-term injuries, necessitated the acquisition. The team has been noticeably lacking a true No. 2 center, and Danault, despite his recent struggles, is expected to fill that void. While not necessarily a top-six center, Danault provides crucial depth and reliability down the middle.

Danault, 32, is in the midst of a disappointing season with the Kings, having recorded just five assists in 30 games. This is a stark contrast to his production in previous seasons, including a career-high 54 points with Los Angeles in 2022-23. He carries a $5.5 million cap hit and will be a free agent after the 2026-27 season. The Kings did not retain any salary in the trade.

During his previous stint in Montreal, Danault was known for his strong two-way play and emerged as a fan favorite. His best season with the Canadiens came in 2018-19, when he registered 53 points. He also played a key role in the Canadiens' run to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, recording four points in 22 playoff games.

The acquisition of Danault could signal a new phase in the Canadiens' rebuild. His experience and defensive capabilities are expected to address some of the team's current weaknesses, particularly on the penalty kill. Moreover, his familiarity with the Canadiens' system and personnel should allow for a seamless integration into the lineup. He previously helped in the development of Nick Suzuki.

Danault brings a wealth of experience, with 741 regular-season games under his belt. A first-round pick by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2011, Danault has accumulated 399 points (125 goals, 274 assists) in his NHL career. He has also participated in 62 Stanley Cup Playoff games, tallying 28 points (nine goals, 19 assists).

The Canadiens hope Danault can rediscover his previous form and provide a spark to a team looking to solidify its position in the Atlantic Division. Montreal currently holds second place in the Atlantic Division, just one point behind the Detroit Red Wings. General manager Kent Hughes expressed confidence that Danault will be re-energized by returning to Montreal. Danault is expected to join the team for its game against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday.
