In a touching tribute, Diogo Jota's sons, Dinis and Duarte, will join the matchday mascots when Liverpool faces Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield this Saturday. This Premier League match marks the first time the two clubs have met since Jota's tragic passing in a car accident in July. The Portuguese forward, who was 28 years old, played for both Liverpool and Wolves during his career.
Jota, alongside his brother Andre Silva, lost his life in a car crash in northwestern Spain. He was en route back to Merseyside for pre-season preparations on July 3 when the accident occurred.
The presence of Dinis and Duarte as mascots is expected to create an emotional atmosphere at Anfield. Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, will also be in attendance for the match. The family was present at both Liverpool and Wolves' Premier League home openers in August. During that time, fans displayed tributes to Jota. Liverpool supporters created mosaics that read 'DJ20' and 'AS30,' while Wolves fans displayed a banner of Jota. Wolves also played Jota's favorite song, "Fields of Gold" by Sting. Liverpool went further by retiring Jota's No. 20 jersey.
Jota initially joined Wolves on loan in 2017 before making a permanent move the following year. He played a key role in the team's promotion to the Premier League and their subsequent success. In September 2020, Jota signed a five-year deal with Liverpool, where he won the Premier League title, FA Cup, and two League Cups.
Liverpool's manager, Arne Slot, acknowledged the sense of loss surrounding the game. In his pre-match program notes, Slot expressed his hope that the support from the Liverpool community would bring solace to Jota's family. He recognized the strong connection Jota had with both Liverpool and Wolves.
