Matty Beniers played the hero Friday night, scoring the decisive shootout goal to lift the Seattle Kraken to a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. The Kraken improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven games, while the Canucks lost their fifth straight home game.
Cale Fleury, Chandler Stephenson, and Ben Meyers scored in regulation for the Kraken. For Vancouver, Kiefer Sherwood, Jake DeBrusk, and Linus Karlsson found the back of the net.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the Kraken initially taking a two-goal lead. Fleury opened the scoring with a slap shot at 17:34 of the first period, his first goal since November 2019. Stephenson extended the lead with a power-play goal at 8:53 of the second.
The Canucks responded with two goals of their own to tie the game. Sherwood scored late in the second period, and DeBrusk redirected a shot into the net early in the third. Ben Meyers then put Seattle ahead again, but Karlsson scored through Joey Daccord's legs to tie the game at 3-3.
A potential game-winning goal by Vince Dunn for the Kraken in overtime was disallowed due to an interference penalty called on rookie Berkly Catton. The Kraken successfully killed off the ensuing power play, sending the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, Joey Daccord stopped all three Vancouver attempts, while Matty Beniers scored the lone goal to secure the win for Seattle. Daccord finished the game with 20 saves. Thatcher Demko made 25 saves for the Canucks.
This was the second meeting between the two teams in a week, with Vancouver having won the previous encounter in a shootout. The Kraken are now 18-14-7 on the season. The Canucks fall to 4-1 in shootouts this season. Linus Karlsson, who scored the tying goal for Vancouver, signed a two-year, $4.5 million contract extension earlier in the day.
