Jackson Blake, the Carolina Hurricanes' right winger, is exceeding expectations in his sophomore season, solidifying his role as a key player for the team. Born on August 3, 2003, in Fargo, North Dakota, the 22-year-old is proving to be a valuable asset to the Hurricanes.
Blake's journey to the NHL began with a strong foundation in his early years, playing at Shattuck-Saint Mary's before excelling at Eden Prairie High School. He led Eden Prairie to a Class 2A state championship in 2021. His development continued with the Chicago Steel in the USHL, where he won the Clark Cup championship.
Drafted by the Hurricanes in the fourth round (109th overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Blake further honed his skills at the University of North Dakota. In his freshman year (2022-23), he led the team in scoring with 16 goals and 26 assists in 39 games and was named NCHC Rookie of the Year. His impressive performance continued into his sophomore year, where he recorded 22 goals and 38 assists in 40 games. He was also a Hobey Baker Memorial Award Hat Trick Finalist.
Blake signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Hurricanes on April 10, 2024. He made his NHL debut on April 16, 2024, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He secured a spot on the opening night roster for the 2024–25 season. His first NHL goal came on October 15, 2024, against the New Jersey Devils. During his first full professional season, Blake tallied 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points. He also led all NHL rookies in game-winning goals, tying for the most in team history with 6. Blake played in all 15 of the Hurricanes' Stanley Cup Playoff games, contributing 6 points. Recognizing his potential, the Hurricanes signed Blake to an eight-year, $45 million contract extension on July 25, 2025, set to begin in the 2026–27 season.
Ahead of the 2025-26 season, Blake expressed his desire to elevate his game further. Through 38 games of the 2025-2026 season, Blake has scored 12 goals and 12 assists. As of January 6, 2026, he has 24 points and has been a consistent presence in the Hurricanes' top-six forwards.
Blake's contributions extend beyond scoring. He is known for his hockey IQ, work ethic, and ability to win puck battles. Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour has praised Blake's consistent performance and smart play. Blake's two-way game and defensive responsibility is demonstrated by his plus/minus statistic. While not the biggest player at 5'11" and 185 lbs, Blake plays with a fearless attitude.
