Canadiens News & Buzz: Exploring Demidov's Potential, Hutson's Rise, and Latest Montreal Hockey Rumours

Here's the latest surrounding the Montreal Canadiens:

Lane Hutson's Potential Long-Term Extension

The Montreal Canadiens are reportedly in talks with defenseman Lane Hutson's camp regarding a massive, long-term contract extension. According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast, the two sides are "on the five-yard line" in negotiations. Recent deals for Luke Hughes and Jackson LaCombe may influence Hutson's talks, but Friedman doesn't believe it will be by much. There is a theory that the Canadiens are trying to keep information about the deal under wraps as they work to finalize it. Some worry that Hutson could be aiming for a contract in the range of $10 or $11 million, potentially exceeding Noah Dobson's $9.5 million, but Friedman doesn't believe the Lacombe deal hurts Montreal as much as some think.

Hutson, who signed his entry-level contract with the Canadiens on April 12, 2024, quickly made his mark in the NHL, earning Rookie of the Month honors for December 2024. In the 2024-25 season, Hutson recorded 65 points, breaking Chris Chelios' record for the most points by a rookie defenseman in Canadiens history. He was also voted the winner of the Calder Trophy.

Ivan Demidov Injury Update

During a recent heated preseason game between the Canadiens and the Ottawa Senators, rookie standout Ivan Demidov took a "vicious two-handed slash across the arm and wrist" from Ottawa forward Nick Cousins. While Demidov appeared to be in discomfort, clutching his arm as he went to the bench, initial reports suggest that there is "no long-term injury concern". Canadiens coach Marty St. Louis stated that Demidov was still being evaluated.

The incident has drawn scrutiny, with some questioning whether supplemental discipline should follow to protect star players. Cousins was ultimately fined $2,148.44, the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement, for slashing Demidov. Demidov participated in practice Thursday after leaving Tuesday's game.

Demidov, who is considered a top prospect and potential Calder Trophy candidate, is expected to be ready to start the season on time.
