AB de Villiers backs Shubman Gill as ODI captain, sees Kohli-Rohit influence for 2027 World Cup.

In a significant move signaling a strategic shift towards the future, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. This decision, made ahead of the upcoming ODI series against Australia starting on October 19, reflects a long-term vision, keeping the 2027 World Cup in mind.

The announcement has been met with considerable discussion within the cricketing fraternity. Adding his perspective to the conversation, South African legend AB de Villiers has endorsed the BCCI's decision, deeming it a "right move". De Villiers emphasized that there is no certainty that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be part of the squad for the 2027 World Cup. He believes that Gill has a strong possibility of being present at the next World Cup because he is in excellent form and is a great leader.

"It's not a guarantee both of them will be there for that next World Cup. That's maybe part of the thinking when they made Shubman Gill the ODI captain," de Villiers stated on his YouTube channel. He further added, "He has a good chance of being there, young gun, in incredible form and a fantastic leader. I think this was the right move, to still have Rohit and Virat".

De Villiers highlighted the invaluable learning opportunity for Gill, having Kohli and Rohit around to guide him. "Shubman Gill will learn from two of the most experienced Indian players of all time, high quality, legendary players," he said. "It will be fantastic for Shubman to have them around". He noted that while Kohli and Rohit will face stiff competition to maintain their places, their experience and guidance will be a great asset to the team.

The decision to appoint Gill also streamlines the leadership across formats, with Gill already leading the Test side and Suryakumar Yadav captaining the T20I team. This move aims to bring consistency and better planning to the team's strategy.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision, stating it was "practically impossible" to continue with three different captains across formats. He emphasized the need for long-term planning and giving the new captain sufficient time to build a team and develop his leadership style. Agarkar acknowledged that while Rohit Sharma had led India to victory in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, the selectors had to look forward and make tough calls in the interest of the team.

While some have questioned the timing of the decision, especially after Rohit Sharma's successful tenure, Agarkar clarified that it was not a reflection of Sharma's performance but a strategic move for the future. The selectors have expressed strong confidence in Shubman Gill's leadership abilities and his consistent performance across formats.

Gill himself has described his appointment as the "biggest honour" and expressed pride in carrying forward the legacy left by Rohit Sharma. He acknowledged the immense experience and contributions of both Sharma and Kohli and looks forward to their guidance.

The ODI squad for the Australia series includes both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, ensuring a blend of youth and experience. Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice-captain for the series. The series will be Gill's first assignment as ODI captain, offering him a platform to showcase his leadership skills and begin building towards the 2027 World Cup.
