Shubman Gill etched his name in the record books on Saturday, October 11, 2025, with a magnificent Test century against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. This feat marked his maiden Test century as India captain, and in the process, Gill surpassed Sachin Tendulkar and broke a record previously held by Virat Kohli.

The 26-year-old's innings was a masterclass in composure and concentration, overcoming the disappointment of a run-out mix-up with Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the day. Jaiswal, who was on his way to a potential double century, was unfortunate to be run out, but Gill did not let the incident distract him. He reached his century in 177 balls, adorned with 13 boundaries and a six, thoroughly dominating the West Indies bowlers.

In his first series as captain on home soil, Gill continued the record-breaking form he displayed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. This was Gill's fifth Test century as captain in just 12 innings, making him the second-fastest Indian and third overall to reach the milestone. Only Alastair Cook (nine innings) and Sunil Gavaskar (10 innings) reached five centuries faster.

Gill's achievement also puts him in an elite list of Indian captains. He equaled M.S. Dhoni's tally of five Test centuries as captain, surpassing Rohit Sharma's previous mark. Furthermore, Gill became only the third Indian captain to score five Test centuries in a calendar year, joining Virat Kohli, who achieved this feat twice. However, Gill reached the milestone faster, in 12 innings compared to Kohli's 18.

The Delhi crowd erupted in applause as Gill reached his century, acknowledging their support by removing his helmet. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was also seen giving a standing ovation from the dressing room. This century was also Gill's highest individual score in home Tests, surpassing his previous best of 128 against Australia in Ahmedabad in 2023.
