Oilers' Offense Faces Early Test: How Will They Replace Zach Hyman's Impact at Season's Start?

The Edmonton Oilers will begin the 2025-26 NHL season without a key piece of their offensive puzzle, as forward Zach Hyman is sidelined with a wrist injury. The injury, sustained during the Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars in late May, has lingered and will keep Hyman out of the lineup until at least November.

Hyman's injury occurred during Game 4 of the Western Conference Final in a collision with Stars forward Mason Marchment. The collision resulted in a dislocated wrist and ligament damage, requiring surgery. Hyman underwent surgery shortly after the injury, but his recovery has been ongoing throughout the summer.

Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch addressed Hyman's status, stating that the team expects him to be ready for game action around November 1st. While Knoblauch didn't provide a firm return date, he indicated that Hyman would miss the season opener against the Calgary Flames on October 8th. It is projected that Hyman will miss the first 12 games of the season.

Hyman himself has spoken about his recovery, expressing uncertainty about being ready for opening night. At Hockey Canada's National Teams Orientation Camp in late August, Hyman stated that he was on the right track but couldn't guarantee his availability for the start of the season. He is scheduled to have a final check-up with his surgeon, but there is no guarantee he will be cleared to play by October 8th.

The absence of Hyman is a significant blow to the Oilers. He has been a key contributor to the team's success over the past two seasons, providing scoring depth and a physical presence on the top lines. In the 2023-24 season, Hyman recorded a career-high 54 goals. Last season, he had 27 goals and 44 points in 73 games. In the 2025 playoffs, Hyman contributed 11 points in 15 games and led all skaters with 111 hits, despite missing the final two rounds.

Hyman's absence was felt during the Oilers' run to the Stanley Cup Final last season. Some believe that a healthy Hyman could have made the difference in the Final against the Florida Panthers.

In Hyman's absence, other players will have the opportunity to step up and fill the void. Trent Frederic is expected to start the year on the top line alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

The Oilers have placed Hyman on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) to start the season. This move provides the team with some salary cap relief, but it also means that Hyman will be out for at least the first month of the season.

Despite the setback, Hyman has remained focused on his recovery and is eager to return to the ice. He has been skating and training throughout the summer, wearing a protective brace. Hyman has also expressed his determination to represent Canada in international competitions.
