Mammoth's Kevin Rooney Proving He Still Belongs In the NHL With Roadrunners
Two days before the start of the Utah Mammoth's 2025-26 season, veteran forward Kevin Rooney found himself fighting for a spot in the NHL. After a full season with the Calgary Flames, where he tallied 10 points in 70 games, Rooney didn't receive a contract offer. Determined to continue his career, the 32-year-old Massachusetts native signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Utah Mammoth for $775,000.
Rooney's journey back to the NHL began with the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League (AHL). After clearing waivers, he was assigned to Tucson, where he quickly made an impact. In just four games with the Roadrunners, Rooney showcased his offensive capabilities, notching three goals and one assist. His strong performance didn't go unnoticed.
"I'm lucky," Rooney said. "My family and my circle back home were there for me. I tried to go to the gym and go to the rink every day with a purpose: to get better, to prove people wrong, and to prove to people that I can still play even though I'm a little bit older.".
On October 23, 2025, Rooney's hard work and determination paid off when he was recalled to the Utah Mammoth. This opportunity arose following a roster move that saw Andrew Agozzino sent down to the Roadrunners. Whether Rooney would immediately suit up for the Mammoth's game against the Blues depended on the health of Jack McBain.
Rooney's path to the NHL wasn't conventional. After going undrafted, he played four seasons at Providence College before signing a professional contract with the Albany Devils of the AHL. He signed a one-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils on February 27, 2017. He made his NHL debut against the Washington Capitals two nights later. Before joining the Flames, Rooney spent time with the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers, establishing himself as a reliable depth center. Through his NHL career, he has recorded 60 points and 134 penalty minutes in 330 games. He has also played 242 AHL games, amassing 93 points and 156 penalty minutes.
His recent performance with the Roadrunners is a testament to his commitment and skill. In a game against the Ontario Reign on October 12, Rooney scored for the second straight game, contributing to a 4-2 defeat. He buried a one-timer off a pass from rookie Daniil But, showcasing his ability to capitalize on offensive opportunities. Throughout October, Rooney has been a consistent offensive presence for the Roadrunners.
Rooney's journey demonstrates his resilience and unwavering commitment to his hockey career. Despite facing setbacks and challenges, he has persevered, earning another chance to prove his worth in the NHL. Now, with a fresh opportunity with the Utah Mammoth, Rooney aims to solidify his place in the league and demonstrate that he still belongs.
